Between and beyond them, Greer came to be respected as well for his community contributions. The first was his World War II service with the RCAF. He volunteered as a flight navigator, serving primarily aboard the Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Though not directly engaging in combat, he flew on missions across Europe and the Middle East, delivering essential armaments, supplies and combat-loaded paratroopers. Saved a girl The second event occurred when he saved a young girl's life. Her nylon dress caught fire after a boy threw a lit firecracker at her. Witnessing the danger, Greeer acted swiftly, removed his work apron, and used it to put out the fire. Despite suffering severe burns, the girl survived and recovered thanks to Ken's quick response. At the time of that incident, he was working at Mr. Jephson's Baldwin Street hardware store, which he eventually purchased and owned for 26 years. Prior to this and following the war, Greer worked with Murray Robinson, the local undertaker and a fellow RCAF navigator.
