In Brooklin, he was actively involved with the public school board and served as the Warden of St. Thomas' Anglican Church. Affectionately known as Guthrie among his friends and colleagues, he exhibited a particular passion for geriatric medicine. For 26 years, he served as the Chief Medical Advisor for Fairview Manor in Whitby. The Atlantic Navigator An avid sailor, Dr. Grant undertook a challenging 21-day Atlantic crossing from Halifax to Plymouth, U.K., in 1980, as navigator aboard the Leonora IV, a 35-foot sailboat. He also had an interest in mineralogy, enjoying the study of the chemistry, crystal structure and physical properties of minerals and mineralized artifacts. Apart from his academic pursuits, he and his wife were often seen walking through the fields of Durham region, accompan ied by their Scottish Deerhounds, or on the beaches near their retreat in Victoria Beach, Manitoba. They once hosted Prince Andrew during a snowy winter when he was stranded on his way to a hockey game in Buffalo. Their son Donald befriended the prince at Gordonstoun, a private school in Scotland, where Donald was an exchange student, and later at Lakefield College near Peterborough. After a 15-month struggle with brain cancer, Dr. Grant passed away on 2001 and his wife Joy five years later. They both rest in St Paul Anglican Cemetery in Columbus, Ontario.
