Friday, July 28, 2023 5 Brooklin Town Crier No matter your cycling skill level, riding a bike as a form of exercise can improve your overall health and well-being. In fact, a recent Sports Medicine journal study quoted in "Cycling Today" magazine has shown that regular use of a bike promotes a longer, healthier life. Does it mean I will live longer? Only time will tell. But as a regular road cyclist, I would like to think so. While busy life routines and work commitments fill many days, taking time to ride your bike can be both a fun and rewarding experience. It could be a short family ride around the neighbourhood, cycling to school or work, a planned mountain bike adventure in Durham Forest or a longer ride around Brooklin and beyond. With so many choices, the best part is that you can determine your level of activity, frequency, and intensity. All that's required is a commitment to ride your bike. And here is something else to consider. Drawing from a recent Partnership for Active Travel and Health (PATH) study, 60% of local trips are less than 5 kms in Two Pedals - Two Wheels By Ron Lalonde Cycling: A Healthy Lifestyle length. Of those, approximately 25% may be less than 1 km and could be accomplished by riding a bike. Though this may not always be practical for everyone, it's an option to consider. If you wish to improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscle and bone strength, flexibility, and overall coordination, your bike awaits you. Further to this, additional benefits may include lower stress levels, a decrease in body fat and possible disease prevention. With physical inactivity as a leading cause to many health issues across all age groups, why not make a change for the better? Not only will you be making a personal life style change, over time, your improved physical fitness will thank you. Lastly, prior to commencing a new exercise routine, perhaps a consultation with your health care provider is right for you.
