A familiar name in Whitby municipal politics was recognized for his decades of serving the community with the 2022 Peter Perry Award. Joe Drumm, who retired from municipal politics in 2018 after 41 years, was the recipient of this year's award at the Peter Perry and Business Achievement Awards hosted by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. Named after a Whitby town founder, the Peter Perry Award has been given out since 1955 in Whitby to mark dedication to the community. Mayor Don Mitchell announced the award on Nov. 10 at a gala at the Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility. "I served on council for 41 years," said Drumm at the gala. "We always looked to better our community. We tried to work together. We didn't always agree, but our goal to help build Whitby was the same." Drumm first joined Whitby council in 1977 as east ward councillor and held that seat for 11 years before becoming a regional councillor in 1988. He continued on in that role until 2018 when he retired at the age of 88. In addition to recognizing Drumm, local businesses were also highlighted at the gala.
