7 | durhamregion.com | This Week | Thursday, November 17, 2022 | The downtown Oshawa location is the fourth Chef Rajan and his wife Joy have opened since his arrival in Canada a decade ago, following restaurants in Scarborough and Durham. 'Cooking is my passion' says owner of Street Momo. Khatri has a long history in the kitchen. Before coming to Canada in 2010, he spent 17 years as a chef in high-end hotels in different parts of Asia. When he arrived in Canada as a skilled worker, Khatri worked in several Indian restaurants before opening his first business, in Scarborough, which he ran for five years. In 2019, he came to Durham and opened restaurants focusing on dishes popular in Pakistan and northern Indian cuisine. Khatri says momos were an obvious choice for his new venture in Oshawa, because he wants to introduce local residents to the food he grew up with in Nepal. Momo, a Nepali word, means 'dumpling' in English. Momos are a type of dumpling -- they're often steamed but can also be deep fried or pan fried. "It is the most popular food in Nepal. In the corner of every street they have the momo counter," said Raj Khatri, who owns Street Momo with his wife Joy. "Here in my restaurant I use the same recipe as back home." "Besides momos, we serve authentic Indian cuisine and I added some Thai and Hakka on the side," Khatri said, noting his focus is on fresh, scratch-made food. Street Momo is different than other Indian restaurants. Cleanliness is one of our highest priorities and all of our sauces and ingredients are created in our kitchen. We pride ourselves in practicing a very high standard to give our customers the best quality food and service. Our spices are blended in our kitchen using natural ingredients giving all dishes a truly authentic flavour. We use a real clay oven to cook Naans and Roti. Our Indian Chef Prakash, Tandoori Chef Hitu and Hauka Thai Chef Witchayarat are very talented and carry over 17 years of cooking experience. Signature dishes include starters like Samosa, Chicken Pakora, Mango Salad and Onion Bhaja; several types of momos, from Tandoori to Steamed; popular Indian dishes like Butter Chicken and Paneer Tikka; and vegetable options, such as Aloo Gobhi Marsala, Baingan Bharta, Bhindi Do Pyaz, Saag Paneer, Malai Kofta, Shahi Paneer and Chana Masala. Popular dishes include butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, chili chicken, vegetable chow mein and desserts like homemade kulfi. "Cooking is my passion," Khatri said. "I am so lucky to achieve my goal and my dream come true."
