Leading 3-1 after two periods against the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Generals appeared set to snap a five-game losing streak and win their first Ontario League Game since Oct. 28. Then the roof fell in. A bad goal 15 seconds into the third period started Hamilton rolling, when a defensive breakdown led to a stoppable shot allowed by goalie Patrick Leaver. "We had a breakdown on our coverage and I didn't like the goal. We need a save there to get us settled into the period, maybe that changes the whole period," said Generals head coach Derek Laxdal. Then an Oshawa penalty resulted in a tying goal by the Bulldogs a few minutes later. The coup de grace, however, came when Oshawa veteran Cameron Butler took a five-minute major for slew-footing Hamilton captain Logan Morrison at the midway mark of the third period. Cue the curtains on the Generals as Hamilton scored a pair of power-play goals to put the contest away and stretch Oshawa's winless streak. Result: 5-3 win for Hamilton. "We have to learn to stay out of the penalty box. And we have to get better on our penalty kill," said Laxdal. In fact, the Generals have won just twice going back to Oct. 7, when they won 6-3 in Niagara. Over that span of 12 games, they only have a 4-3 win in Guelph and a 3-2 overtime win at home to Hamilton to show for their ef- forts. They also picked up a point in an 8-7 shootout loss in Flint. That's five points in 12 games, which leaves the Generals ninth in the Eastern Conference with 12 points in 16 games, just a point ahead of 10th place Niagara. "It's been a frustrating couple of weeks. We are what we are. We're not getting enough from our top players consistently and it's showing up in the game sheet. Our goaltending has to get better. Patrick Leaver wants to be the No. 1. He's given up consistently a bad goal every game. We've got to figure out how to stop that," Laxdal said. The loss on Sunday spoiled a breakout game for second-year defenceman Luca Marelli, who scored the first two goals of his OHL career in his 78th game. Dylan Roobroeck had the other goal, a power-play marker. On Friday night in Ottawa, the Generals lost 6-3 to the powerhouse 67's, with Blake Smith finding the net for his first career OHL goal in his 68th game. Stuart Rolofs and Brett Harrison each scored their sixth goals of the season for the Generals. Top-rated 2023 NHL draft prospect Calum Ritchie has struggled of late to score. He is pointless in his last five games and has just two goals and 1 assist in his last 9 games. The Generals take on the Petes in Peterborough this Thursday. Peterborough just picked up Pickering star Brennan Othmann from Flint. Othmann, who scored 50 goals last year and is a first-round NHL draft choice of the New York Rangers, requested a trade from Flint. The Petes acquired him for a player and three draft choices. The Generals are at home to Owen Sound Friday night (7:35 p.m.) and host Sarnia Sunday afternoon (2:05 p.m.).
