For some, it's about being environmentally sustainable, or saving money. Others want looks you won't find at the mall, or they love sharing unique finds on TikTok. Conner Stella and Evan Saar are seeing this trend firsthand. The pair own Baby's Basement in downtown Oshawa, where they sell "curated and wearable" vintage clothing. The store has built a loyal following since opening in 2020 and recently made the move to a bigger space at 29 King St. E. In the new store, the walls are adorned with colourful murals painted by Saar and the racks and tables are filled with vintage clothing and accessories -- from graphic tees and sunglasses, to cardigans and boots. Stella has been a second-hand shopper since she was a teen and lived across the street from a Value Village. "It became a full blown addiction," she says. "I was finding these really exciting pieces. I became very interested in how things are made, where they come from ... it became a full-time hobby." Fast forward to 2017 -- Stella started selling vintage clothing on eBay and then on her own website and at pop-ups. She had thought about opening a store, but didn't take the plunge until the pandemic hit and lock-downs gave her and Saar time to devote to the idea. Baby's Basement opened in downtown Oshawa in December 2020 in the thick of the pandemic. Over almost two years, Stella and Saar have seen interest in second-hand shopping continue to build. Most of their customers are under 30, but in the new space they're already seeing other age groups dropping in. "There are a lot of trend predictions that say the second-hand market will eclipse the mall and fast fashion in the next 20 to 30 years," Stella says. In addition to factors like environmental sustainability, Saar says nostalgia plays a big role. Like the slow food movement, he says slow fashion is something people are paying attention to. "Things used to exist physically and have weight to them," he says. "We're living in this reality where it's buy, buy buy and then throw it out. I feel like people are craving everything slowing down a little bit." While vintage sports gear and band T-shirts were some of the first second-hand items to go mainstream, Baby's Basement is a conscious step away from those trends. "We have more an eclectic, eccentric taste. A little funkier, a little quirkier," Saar says. Baby's Basement also sells unique home decor and locally made goods including candles, glassware, tote bags and prints. Are you opening a new business in Durham? Tell us about it!
