How else to explain a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of an opponent who came into the game five points behind them in the Eastern Conference of the Ontario Hockey League standings? Yet the Sudbury Wolves did take it to the Generals, who were flat in front of a capacity home crowd at the Tribute Communities Centre. Oshawa was outshot 40- 29 and outplayed in all phases of the game as the Wolves got a career performance from centre Kocha Delic, who scored four goals. Linemate David Goyette added four assists, and the third member of the line, Quentin Musty, a top prospect for the 2023 NHL draft and first overall pick in the 2021 OHL draft, added two assists. Musty was thrown out of the game after a five-minute slewfoot major in the second period. Only Luc D'Amato was able to score for Oshawa on Sunday. The Generals may still have been reeling after a "gut-wrenching" 5-4 shootout loss in Ottawa on Friday night. Oshawa had the game well in hand, up 4-1 with just 92 seconds to play before Ottawa stormed back to tie it, including scoring twice with the goalie pulled. The loss stung even more because the Eastern Conference-leading 67's, who have swept the season series with Generals so far in four meetings, including two shootout wins, were without four star players. Jack Matier (Canada), Vinzenz Rohrer (Austria) and Tyler Boucher (U.S.) are with their world junior teams, while Jack Beck is injured. So, the Generals were primed for a victory against an undermanned 67's squad and played an excellent road game for 58 and a half minutes. After overtime solved nothing, both teams got a goal each from their first three shooters, and it took until the sixth round before Brad Gardiner sealed it for Ottawa. Scoring for the Generals on Friday were Ryder McIntyre, with his second of the season, Cam Butler and Stuart Rolofs, each with their 10th, and rookie Beckett Sennecke, with his 11th. The Generals find themselves still in a playoff spot at the Christmas break with 26 points in 29 games, and have 39 games to play in the 68-game season. They are three points ahead of ninth-place Sudbury and three points behind seventh-place Hamilton. Eight teams of the 10 in the conference make the playoffs. Oshawa is off until Dec. 28, when they return to action on home ice against the Kingston Frontenacs. Game time is 7:05 p.m. GENERALS FLAT IN PRE-CHRISTMAS LOSS TO SUDBURY TIM KELLY tkelly@durhamregion.com OHL GENERALS OUTSHOT, OUTPLAYED AS WOLVES HAVE THEIR WAY IN OSHAWA Newest Oshawa General Joseph Serpa, who was acquired from the Kitchener Rangers last week for Lleyton Moore, fires a shot on Sunday, Dec. 18 in a 7-1 loss at the Tribute Communities Centre to the Sudbury Wolves.
