A private member's bill from Oshawa MPP Jennifer French that would see steeper penalties for people who break road laws and kill or seriously injure someone as a result has passed second reading. Currently, minor offences under the Highway Traffic Act -- like an unsafe left turn -- carry a maximum fine of $500, even though they can have tragic consequences. The Fairness for Road Users Act aims to bring penalties in line with those for careless driving, which could include a minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum fine of $50,000; imprisonment for up to two years; and licence or permit suspension for up to five years. French said Queen's Park has been talking about this issue for 20 years, and she is pleased to see the government listen to the "heart-wrenching calls for action" from those hurt or those who have lost loved ones. "When a road user is seriously injured, or a family suffers the loss of a loved one on the road, they should not have to suffer insult after injury," said French. "My bill proposes steeper penalties so that people don't keep walking away with a slap on the wrist when they break the road rules and cause grievous harm that leaves families in mourning." Gerry Rhodes, provincial government liaison officer for Bikers Rights Organization, calls the bill "extremely important," saying it would "provide justice for victims, deterrence for offenders and fairer treatment under law for all vulnerable road users." OSHAWA MPP'S BILL ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING LAW NEWS Two suspects arrested after an early morning robbery at a convenience store in Mitchell Corners have now been charged in connection with an armed robbery two days earlier, police said. The arrest occurred Friday, Nov. 18 after officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at a Circle K store in the area of Taunton and Trulls roads just before 5 a.m., Durham police said. A suspect grabbed cash and cigarettes then fled to a waiting car, police said. Police caught up with the suspect vehicle in the area of Hwy. 2 and Farrow Avenue in Newcastle, where it reportedly struck a police cruiser before entering the ditch. Suspects fled on foot but were soon rounded up by a police canine team. During the arrest, officers seized an imitation firearm, police said. Further investigation led to the suspects being charged in connection with an armed robbery Nov. 16 at a Circle K store on King Street East in Oshawa. Kenneth Wingfield, 43, of Oshawa and Krista- Lynn Darling, 38, of Pickering face charges, including armed robbery. The charges have not been proven in court.
