WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU SUBMIT YOUR LETTER TO THE EDITOR TODAY! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Lynde House Museum! Volunteers have been busy decorating the oldest house in Durham Region for Victorian Christmas Tours, beginning Nov. 21, and for the annual traditional Candlelight Tours, beginning Dec. 2. Did you know that many of today's Christmas traditions were popularized in the 1800s? Take, for example, the Christmas tree. Prior to the mid-1800s, Christmas trees were considered a Germanic tradition. In 1848, the Illustrated London News published a photo of the Royal Family with their Christmas tree. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were the social influencers of their day, and suddenly everyone wanted a beautifully decorated tree in their home! For the holiday season, Lynde House features a number of uniquely adorned Christmas trees illustrating a variety of Victorian decorations. This year, volunteers will be following historic instructions to craft a selection of new ornaments to add to the collection. Start off the holiday season by transporting your family into the past by visiting the museum after dark during the annual Candlelight Tours. Volunteers in authentic 19th-century costumes will greet you in each room, sharing the history of many of your favourite traditions. Carolers will fill the air with song, and everyone gets to pick a treat from the Candy Tree! Candlelight Tours will take place on the first three Fridays of December. Tickets can be reserved online at lyndehousemuseum.com/events. Victorian Christmas Tours are also available during regular museum daytime hours. These tours focus on the history of Whitby and the Lynde family's story, as a costumed volunteer guides you through the beautifully decorated house. Tours can be booked online at lyndehousemuseum.com/visit. Be sure to support our local artists by visiting the Warren General Store fundraiser gift shop, located next door to the museum. The store is stocked with a wide array of handcrafted gifts, decor, cards, art and tasty local treats. Lynde House tours are an entertaining, educational and beautiful way for the whole family to learn about the history of Christmas. The museum is at 900 Brock St. S. in Whitby. We hope to see you there soon! Julie Ditta is president of the Whitby Historical Society.
