Claringbold grew up in Ajax and was a lifelong athlete, playing baseball in his youth -- including on the provincial champion bantam team in 1961 -- before switching to golf as he grew older. He started at the town as deputy treasurer and tax collector in 1969, before becoming treasurer in 1980. He became CAO in 1999 and retired in 2006. Upon his retirement, Claringbold said one highlight of his career was participating on the design and construction team that worked on Iroquois Park Sports Centre, which helped build something for Whitby that is "pretty much one of a kind as far as municipalities are concerned." A celebration of life will take place at the Lindsay Golf Club on Saturday Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. FLAGS FLYING AT HALF-MAST IN WHITBY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@ durhamregion.com NEWS
