Jeff Mitchell photo NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR The Body Shop is expanding its new concept stores, including the unveiling of a "workshop store" at the Oshawa Centre on Aug. 12. The brand says the concept stores "call back to the retailer's activist roots" with a dedicated "ACT area" where customers can learn about issues affecting their community and how they can take action. The new stores are outfitted with upcycled and reclaimed materials, including countertops made from plastic destined for the landfill. There's also a gifting station where customers can personalize gifts with ribbons and recyclable paper, as well as a refill station where aluminum bottles can be filled with shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and hand washes -- then brought back to refill when empty. In Oshawa, The Body Shop partnered with Chrrie, a local multimedia artist and environmental activist, to create a window mural inspired by the brand's "Be Seen. Be Heard." activism campaign, which highlights the involvement of youth in public life from voting to taking up leadership positions in the community. "To a lot of people, the concept of 'changing the world' can sound a bit abstract. With our workshop stores, we want to bring people together to realize that they can be change-makers and are capable of making small changes that could benefit our communities and the planet," says Hilary Lloyd, vice-president of marketing and corporate responsibility for The Body Shop North America. Three more concept stores are set to open in the coming months in Calgary, Burnaby and Edmonton.
