Ice Cream Squad opened its doors in May at 29 Station St. and recently held an official grand opening celebration June 17. The store is owned by couple Nithan Pasupatham and Kiru Nagaratnam, with help from their three children, Ariyan, Ayanna and Archan. The kids came up with the name for the store and helped design the logo and pick the cheerful pink paint colour. One weekends, you can find the older ones working the cash while their parents are scooping. "We're a very friendly, family-run business," says Pasupatham, explaining they were inspired to open a store that would bring Kawartha Dairy ice cream to their area of Ajax. "Before this, we were driving to Uxbridge to get Kawartha Dairy." Ice Cream Squad offers a lineup of about two dozen Kawartha Dairy flavours that includes favourites like Cotton Candy, Muskoka Mocha, Blue Bubblegum, Black Raspberry Thunder, Death by Chocolate and Salty Caramel Truffle. The menu also includes shakes and sorbets. For those who want a little extra, shakes and scoops can be taken to the next level with toppings like chocolate bars and cotton candy. As first-time small business owners, Pasupatham says the family wasn't sure what kind of community support to expect -- especially because the store is somewhat hidden in a plaza. He says word of mouth combined with support from Facebook groups like Durham Region Eats and South Ajax Neighbours Group have given the business a big boost. "People are appreciative that we're here and we're appreciative of our customers, every one of our customers matters to us," Pasupatham says. "We have lived in Ajax for 13 years; we are very excited to bring this to our community." We want to hear about your favourite places to eat in Durham! Old favourites, hidden gems, new restaurants opening, awesome food trucks.
