6 Friday, October 7, 2022 brooklintowncrier.com I want to Represent Brooklin as Your Mayor Michael G. Emm Occupation: Superintendent of Construction Otis Canada 917 Byron St N, Whitby 905-666-1990 michaelemm@icloud.com www.michaelemm.com www.facebook.com/Michael.emm68 Twitter: @Michael_Emm Instagram votemichaelemm To continue the works I have begun on Whitby Council in my past eight years as Centre Ward Councillor. I felt the need to represent our growing diverse community of Whitby residents at the Regional level. To hold the line on your taxes. There is no reason we can't come in with a much lower tax percentage to support our residents during these ever fiscal challenging times. To work with Town staff to review departments and areas for savings, the past four years sitting outside of Council has given me fresh prospective on where savings can be implemented and revenue generating streams. To continue to push for our own Whitby Hospital, lands have been put aside and we need to work with all levels of government to ensure we get shovels in the ground on this much needed facility in Whitby. We have made terrific improvements in our downtowns and I implemented the no-nonsense bylaw to assist Durham Regional Police. To make our streets safer by working with police to curb speeding and implementing community safety zones where needed. Ron Kapuscinski www.ronkapuscinski.ca k a p p e r 4 c o u n c i l @ gmail.com I grew up in Whitby and with my wife, raised three daughters in Brooklin. I am a very proud member of the community. I have spent the last 27 years in public safety as a Police Officer with the Durham Regional Police Service. For a large part of my career, I worked in the Whitby office. I believe my experience and knowledge I have gained about our communities strengths and challenges has given me a valuable, and unique perspective. I saw first hand and recognized the gaps in the vital services necessary to assist victims of crime or for mental health supports. As an officer that led traffic safety projects and initiatives in Whitby, I understand what is required to implement solutions for roadway safety. I believe Whitby's continued increases in residential tax rates is not affordable or reasonable for our residents. The industrial and commercial tax base must be expanded to offset our residential tax rates. I believe the continued support for our youth sports organizations and facilities is extremely important, ensuring all kids in Whitby have equal access to sport and activities. I am excited for Whitby's future and for the opportunity to represent our community on council. Chris Leahy chris@chrisleahy.ca (905) 922-5079 www.chrisleahy.ca Thank you for allowing me to serve you for the last 12 years, first with the School Board, then Town Council and Regional Council. We have accomplished so much, including approvals for a new hospital & multi-sports complex, road safety improvements & job growth. There is more to do. I will be your trusted voice at Council, managing growth & minimizing your tax burden. We need to implement a Brooklin by-pass to redirect traffic away from downtown Brooklin with minimal environmental impact. I also plan to explore options with DRPS to deter car theft. Other priorities include: · holding the line on taxes and spending, implementing a 311 system, expanding the industrial tax base · expanding the Whitby Green Standard, expanding CLOCA lands, increasing electrification of vehicles · adding a paramedic station in Whitby, implementing speed reduction measures, improving infrastructure, minimizing intensification impacts on existing communities Once your new Council starts, Council members must work collaboratively to establish measurable objectives that reflect our community's needs. I have lived in Whitby my entire life. I am passionate about improving our community so that Brooklin & Whitby remain the best places in Ontario to live, work and raise a family. Vasu Mallula Hello Whitby, I am Vasu Mallula running as a regional councillor to focus on the needs of the people of Whitby and to ensure we have a strong voice in council decisions. As an immigrant, I have faced many challenges. Based on my experience, I understand the needs and aspirations of many diverse communities that have called Canada their home. I have volunteered and helped many initiatives in diverse communities in Canada. You'll have my ear for your ideas for improving our Whitby and Durham region: I'll listen to your concerns about taxes, by-laws, city services, the safety of neighbourhoods and hospitals, and protecting the natural habitat and affordable housing. I will act on your issues and concerns. So many issues affect us as residents. We need to have a voice in the council to protect the best interests of residents. I will focus on creating a business ecosystem to create more jobs. I will work tirelessly with the region, provincial and federal counterparts to ensure funding for hospitals, transit, schools, and advanced technology projects to monitor residents' safety and security. Each municipal election cycle, the Brooklin Town Crier provides all candidates free space to explain their ideas. We contacted Regional Councillor candidates through: a) the emails they provided on the whitby.ca site, or b) via Whitby's town clerk who also emailed candidates with election information and included our request for them to reach us regarding instructions on inclusion in this issue. What follows are their platforms: Candidates for Regional Councillor (four to be elected) 2022 Municipal Election
