In 2021, to mark her five- year anniversary of being diagnosed with breast cancer, R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC) patient Sandra Jack checked an item off her bucket list and raised funds for the treatment centre that became a big part of her life. Jack, her oncologist Dr. Leta Forbes, and friend Krista Tabur went up the 116 storeys of the CN Tower to complete the world's highest full-circle, hands-free walk and raised more than $15,000 for the DRCC by completing the CN Tower EdgeWalk. "She had a light about her that would ignite everyone around her," said Maggie Abbott, a nurse who works in the cancer centre's chemotherapy suite and got to know Jack over the years. The funds were raised for the Lakeridge Health Foundation's Our Cancer Campaign and its $20-million goal to advance cancer care in Durham Region and beyond. Jack was planning to do the walk again in 2022, but she lost her battle with cancer earlier this month. "That was really difficult for us," Abbott said. Before she died, Jack had approached staff and patients in DRCC, asking if they would join the event this year. Jack was able to convince the apprehensive Abbott to sign up for the adventure, but she also became the team captain of The Second Annual Sandra Jack EdgeWalk, taking place Saturday, July 23. "She was the type of person that you wanted to sit and talk to," Abbott said. "Her personality was very infectious." Jack's enthusiasm also encouraged Andrew Witvoet to brave the walk. He met Jack while he was also undergoing treatment for cancer. His mother is a nurse who works in the centre and she, too, agreed to join in.'I thought, if my mom's going to do it, I'm going to do it too," he said.Besides, Witvoet wanted to support the treatment centre that touches many in Durham Region. "It's just sort of a way to give back to the nurses and doctors that basically saved my life," he said. Witvoet was grateful for the kindness he felt during the 12 weeks of treatment that he recently completed. "I love all the nurses there; they're all so kind and helpful," he said. "You can tell they just care about all their patients there, which is nice." The team has a goal of surpassing $15,000 once again this year. "Cancer touches so many people in our lives and I think this money will go to great use," Abbott said. "And no donation is too small. Whether it be five dollars, anything, it really adds up. I'll be up there thinking bout the people who donated and the patients I have had the privilege of meeting and treating over the past 12 years." To donate, visit: sandrajackedgewalk.ca.
