First responders came to the aid of a sailor whose boat was overturned on a windy Lake Ontario Thursday afternoon, July 21 in Whitby. The rescue was the second incident in two days in the harbour area that required an emergency response, Whitby Fire Deputy Chief Mike Hickey said. The incidents highlight the need for those going out on the lake to be aware of safe boating rules and weather conditions, he said. In Thursday's incident, Whitby firefighters were among the responders to a report of a sailboat that had overturned. The operator of the small craft grew exhausted while trying to right the boat and required assistance, Hickey said. A Durham police officer was taken out onto the lake in a boat operated by a Town of Whitby marina worker and the boater was retrieved, uninjured. On Wednesday, July 20, first responders were at the harbour for an incident in which a personal watercraft carrying three people struck the pier. Two people were uninjured, but the third, a child, was helped out of the water by firefighters. The young person was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital, Hickey said. Choppy water conditions may have contributed to the mishap, he added. The incidents indicate the need for boaters and others to be aware of safe marine practices, Hickey stressed. He recommended anyone operating a vessel to obtain their pleasure craft operator's card, which requires applicants to take a boating safety course. As well, people need to respect Lake Ontario and be aware conditions can change quickly. "People really need to be mindful of the weather on Lake Ontario," Hickey said. "As the day progresses the water can start to get choppier and windier."
