The annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Against Domestic Violence creates awareness about the often isolating issue of domestic violence and raises funds for the local Bethesda House women's shelter and its outreach programs. "After 10 consecutive years of walks, it felt crushing in 2020 not to be able to hold our annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," Bethesda House executive director, Jaki MacKinnon, said in an email. The walk had to be cancelled in 2020 and with pandemic restriction still in place it went virtual in 2021. This June will be the first ever in-person -- and virtual -- Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event in Durham. There are two different ways to support the cause: 1. In-person red show walk On Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School, 300 Scugog St. in Bowman- ville. -- Arrive at 10:45 a.m. to warm-up. -- Rent Bethesda House's red high heeled shoes to "walk in women's shoes" symbolizing your support for abused women in the community -- or wear any shoes -- and walk with family, friends, kids and pets. -- Contact events@bethesdahouse.ca to reserve red high-heeled shoes. 2. Virtual walk -- your-way Between Saturday, June 11 and Saturday, June 18. Participants can walk: -- any time -- anywhere -- any distance -- alone or with family, friends, kids and pets Bethesda House is a pet- friendly shelter, meaning pets can come into the shelter with their owners. Walkers are encouraged to involve their pets in the fundraising walk, with Bethesda House dog bandanas included in registration kits upon request. "To raise awareness that we're a pet-friendly shelter, we invited participants to walk with their dogs, or get pictures of their cats in Bethesda House bandanas," said MacKinnon.
