Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Keiran Moore announced that most provincial mask mandates would be lifted on June 11 including mandates for mask use on public transit and in hospitals. Mask mandates will remain in long-term care and retirement homes. "While masking requirements are expiring, organizations may implement their own policies," said Moore in a statement. "Ontarians should continue to wear a mask if they feel it is right for them, are at high risk for severe illness, recovering from COVID-19, have symptoms of the virus or are a close contact of someone with COVID-19. " Lakeridge Health will opt to keep mask requirements in place for visitors. "Ensuring the safety of all patients, staff, and their families is our top priority at Lakeridge Health," said Lakeridge spokesperson Sharon Navarro. "For the foreseeable future, all individuals entering any Lakeridge Health hospital or clinic will be required to wear a mask. Individuals arriving at any of our facilities will be screened and asked to don a hospital-issued mask if not already wearing a medical-grade mask or N95 respirator, as per our current protocol." Durham reported 234 new COVID-19 cases between May 29 and June 4 with eight new hospitalizations and two new deaths. Altogether 492 people have died due to COVID-19 in Durham. There are currently 13 COVID-19 patients at Lakeridge Health with seven more cases under investigation.
