The Durham District School Board (DDSB) has put two rural school properties up for sale again after previous attempts to sell them didn't pan out. The former Cartwright High School site is located at 14220 Old Scugog Rd. in Blackstock. The school closed in 2013 after nearly 90 years as a hub in the community; the DDSB cited declining student enrolment and skyrocketing repair costs. Community efforts were made to save the school, and parents even took their concerns to the province. In 2014, the Township of Scugog moved to designate the Cartwright High School property under the Ontario Heritage Act. The DDSB objected to the proposed designation, and it still remains in dispute. The former H.W. Knight P.S. site is located at 1310 12th Line outside Cannington. It closed in 2001, and the building was demolished to accommodate the excavation and removal of fuel-impacted soil. Both properties are now up for sale again. There is a 180-day period during which the DDSB must offer them to bodies such as other school boards, colleges and universities and municipalities. If there is no interest, the properties will be offered for sale on the open market.
