A new Amazon Canada sort centre is opening in Whitby and it will create 500 full and part-time jobs. The company an- nounced its plans to build a centre at Conlin and Garrard roads to support the sorting and distribution of packages in eastern Ontario. The centre, dubbed YMH6, will be more than 700,000 square feet and it will be the largest sort centre in Ontario, the company said in an announce- ment. It's expected to open in second half of 2023. Amazon currently has a delivery station at 1555 Wentworth St. in south Whitby that employs several hundred full and part-time jobs. There is also an Amazon fulfilment centre in Ajax at Rossland and Salem roads. It opened last year and employees about 1,000 people. Last year, the company announced it would open a new delivery station at 1400 Squires Beach Rd. in Pickering sometime this year or in 2023. It's the site of the former Pickering Markets. The Pickering station would create about 200 jobs. "The Whitby sort centre is an important part of Amazon's commitment to local growth in Durham," John Benson, general manager of Canada Sort Centre Operations, said in a statement. "Sort centres are an integral part of our middle-mile supply chain. They help communities receive packages more quickly and efficiently, create great, quality jobs and enhance our logistics capabilities in a region. We'd like to thank the Town of Whitby and Durham Region for their continued support as we expand and welcome 500 members of the community to join our growing team." Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell noted, "This new sort centre builds on the hundreds of jobs Amazon has created for our residents, and once again demonstrates that Whitby is the ideal place for businesses to locate and grow. I look forward to the facility's opening next year." Durham Regional Chairman John Henry said in a statement, "With this Whitby sort centre, Amazon has made it clear they intend to grow their presence in Durham Region. This is yet another example of major companies investing in Durham--further cementing us one of the best places in Ontario to invest. We look forward to the job creation and economic growth this facility will bring." The company said in a statement it's building five new facilities in Ontario in 2022 and 2023 that will create 5,500 jobs. The four facilities include fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations in Hamilton, Ottawa, Richmond Hill and Southwold (near St. Thomas). Amazon's expansion in Ontario between 2021 and 2023 represents 20 new facilities and 9,000 jobs, with a total investment of more than $1.5 billion, the company said.
