Please keep our community clean. Starting on Saturday, April 2, Metrolinx is offering half-hour evening and weekend service along the Lakeshore East line in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. GO Train and bus services were cut in January as the Omicron variant circulated, leaving the transit service short of workers. Train service along the line was reduced to once an hour, but it returns to half-hour service this weekend. Metrolinx noted in a statement, "As riders return to GO Transit and UP Express, Metrolinx is bringing back service in phases, starting by resuming and adjusting some service starting April 2. "The changes will offer more flexibility for customers going to events, work, and for reconnecting with family and friends." Masks continue to be mandatory on GO Transit vehicles and inside stations. GO RETURNING TO HALF-HOUR FULL-TIME SERVICE The Ontario Parasport Games are returning to Durham Region. The 2023 Games are ex- pected to attract about 550 participants and generate between $500,000 and $1 million in economic activity. The games were previously held in Durham in 2019. Those games generated about $678,000 in local economic impact and left a legacy fund of $112,000 that is being used to increase adaptive sport opportunities and participation in Durham. The 2019 Games were recognized with several national and provincial awards. There will be 11 sport competitions at eight venues, along with an opening ceremony, and two dinners for participants. In 2019, sports included wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball, 5-A-Side soccer, boccia, goalball, para-alpine, para-nordic, sledge hockey, visually-impaired curling and wheelchair curling. Durham Regional Chair John Henry said in a statement, "Durham Region is honoured to be hosting the Ontario Parasport Games for a second time. It's a reflection of our commitment to accessibility and inclusion -- a community working together to find valuable solutions that produce positive impacts. Collectively building on the best place to call home." Don Terry, the co-chair of the Games, said, "I know our community will rally around this exciting opportunity to build on our experience hosting the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games and grow our legacy initiatives to increase the number of opportunities and participants enjoying the benefits of adaptive sport." "Durham Region boasts a history of accessibility and inclusion with high performance venues and experienced, capable volunteers, making it a fantastic community to successfully host these Games," said co-chair Mike Frogley. The region has previously hosted four other Ontario Games, including the Ontario Summer Games in 2000, the Ontario 55+ Summer Games in 2010, and the Ontario Parasport Games in 2019. As well, Ajax hosted the baseball and softball competitions during the 2015 Pan Am Games, while Oshawa hosted the weightlifting and boxing competitions. For more information, visit www.durham.ca.
