The Optimist Club of Brooklin is launching an exciting new program, the Brooklin Catalyst, aimed at helping and encouraging local young people running their own businesses. People are already familiar with the Optimist Club, which has been active in Brooklin for over 30 years, and works alongside other service clubs to support and enrich many activities. It's part of Optimist International - its motto is 'Friend of Youth' - which has also been instrumental in arranging many regular events such as the youth dances, Breakfast with Santa and Easter Egg hunts. The Catalyst idea was first suggested by Bonnie Kao, a successful entrepreneur who runs Madison Living (madisonliving. ca), a health and wellness business. It was she who approached the Club with the initial idea as a way for young entrepreneurs to learn from established Brooklin business owners. She joined forces with Club member Bev Tarren to develop the idea, however, it soon seemed that Covid restrictions might scupper their plans to start it this year. Now launches As restrictions relaxed in February, they had the opportunity to reconsider and so the program now begins as a small pilot. "We've been fortunate in that a number of successful local business owners have been enthusiastic about helping us," commented Tarren. "Jacki Turner (Write On Resumes) and Karen Lilly (Purpose to Impact) are joining us for the first session, talking about their experiences, good and bad, of being a small business owner and different aspects to be considered. In the second session, we'll be moving on to think about financial and business topics and be guided by Nelly Temraz (JointAction Physiotherapy & Wellness Centre) and Mike Libbey (Your Bottom Line)." Tanja Coughlan and Yara Jbeily complete the Optimist team working together to bring this new initiative to fruition, which launched with an information session in mid April. "Initial feedback has been very positive," said Kao "and we know the scheme will enable young participants to have a fantastic opportunity to learn from others already running their own businesses." The sessions are free for participants. More information can be found on the Brooklin Catalyst Facebook page or through email: Brooklincatalyst@gmail.com.
