7 | This Week | Thursday, March 10,2022 durhamregion.com The COVID-19 vaccination mandate imposed on members of the Durham police service has been met with a high rate of compliance - 95 per cent as of Tuesday, Feb. 15, according to a report to the police services board. And while most members have been immunized, the service has incurred more than $20,000 in costs to conduct testing for members who have chosen not to get the shot, board members heard during their monthly meeting. "We do have members that are choosing not to get immunized," Chief Todd Rollauer said. The service's vaccine policy came into effect Jan. 7. Under the policy, nonvaccinated employees must undergo testing no more than 24 hours before reporting to work or entering a Durham police facility. In addition, all workers are required to conduct regular self-screening. Rollauer said on Feb. 15 that so far the cost to the service to administer testing to non-vaccinated employees has amounted to "just under $23,000." As of Feb. 28, non-vaccinated employees will assume the costs of their own testing, according to information provided on Feb. 15. A report on the issue indicates there have been no staffing issues associated with the mandate. Of the 1,239 employees affected by the policy, 95 are fully vaccinated, while 73 non-vaccinated employees are required to undergo regular testing, according to the report - as of the end of January, 457 tests had been administered. Another six employees who have not been immunized are using banked time off, according to the report.
