SCAN TO DONATE For the first time in the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment, two units are being refurbished at once. Work has begun on Unit 1 at Darlington, at the same time as new reactor components are still being installed on Unit 3. The refurbishment of the four reactors at Darlington will extend the life of the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) station in Clarington for an extra 30 years. The first reactor refurbished, Unit 2, was reconnected to the power grid in mid 2020 and won the project team a Best Practice Award from the Electric Utility Cost Group. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a brief delay to the work on Unit 3, which began in Sept. 2020. On Tuesday, Feb. 15, OPG announced work had started on Unit 1, the third of four reactors to be refurbished. Unit 4, the last unit, is scheduled to begin refurbishment in the third quarter of 2023. Darlington is now more than halfway into the 10- year job (which began in 2016). The overall project is on track to be finished by the end of 2026, according to OPG. "The refurbishment team's successful track record on Units 2 and 3, combined with detailed planning for Unit 1, position us well for continued success," said Subo Sinnathamby, OPG Senior Vice President, Nuclear Refurbishment, in a news release. "Continuous learning and working as a team with our vendor partners and Bruce Power have been key to our success to date. We continue to apply innovations and lessons learned to ensure even better performance as we move forward through this project."
