Pursuant to the Building Code Act Durham Region Council will hold a public meeting to provide interested parties the opportunity to make comments, identify issues and provide additional information relative to the proposed sewage systems inspection fees increase. The public meeting will be held at the regularly scheduled Regional Council meeting which commences at 9:30 a.m. on March 23, 2022 in the Regional Council Chambers located at 605 Rossland Road East, Whitby, Ontario. If you wish to make a delegation before Regional Council, submit your request in writing to delegations@durham.ca by no later than noon on Monday, March 21, 2022. Members of the public who register in advance of the meeting will be provided with the details to delegate electronically. Please note that in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Region of Durham will not be allowing the public into the Council Chambers at this time. Members of the public can speak via teleconference during the meeting. Staff will provide you with the details on how to participate in the meeting. Stones won a bronze medal in the four-man bobsled on Sunday, Feb. 20, the last day of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The Canadian team finished in third behind two German sleds and just ahead of another German team in fourth. Other members of the team include pilot Justin Kripps, Ryan Sommer and Ben Coakwell. Canada finished its four runs in a combined time of 3:55.09, just 0.79 seconds behind the gold medal winners. Following the event, Team Canada tweeted, "A medal four years in the making." Included in the tweet was a comment from Kripps, noting, "This team that has been grinding for four years, been together for four years, and for it to culminate in an Olympic medal is just amazing." A second Canadian team, piloted by Christopher Spring, finished in ninth. Stones and Kripps also competed in the two-man bobsled event, finishing in 10th place. Stones was the only athlete from Durham Region competing in these Olympic Games. He competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics, in the four-man bobsledding event. Dave Holland photo A 20-year-old is facing a number of charges after a Whitby pharmacy was broken into. On Wednesday, Feb. 23 at about 8:50 a.m., Durham Regional Police were called to the West Lynde Pharmacy on Dundas Street after a suspect had broken in while the business was closed. Prescriptions were taken before the suspect fled on foot, police said. While fleeing, the suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at an employee who was arriving for work, police noted. Dylan Lycett, of Whitby, has been charged with use of an imitation firearm during flight, possession of weapons dangerous, break and enter a business, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, assault with a weapon and pointing a firearm. MAN ARMED WITH WINDSHIELD WIPER ROBS WHITBY GAS BAR A suspect brandished a windshield wiper during a robbery at a Whitby gas station, police say. The bandit fled with cash following the incident, at a Petro Canada station on Paisley Court just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, Durham police said. No injuries were reported. Officers arrested a suspect at a nearby motel. Josiah Malcolm, 25, of no fixed address is charged with robbery, possession of a dangerous weapon and wearing a disguise. CRIME BRIEFS SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER WHITBY PHARMACY BREAK-IN
