Before Raven Willow Grace Ducey took her first breath, she brought her Bowmanville community together in the midst of a blizzard. "Meet our incredibly stunning daughter Raven Willow Grace Ducey," said Matt Ducey via text. On Monday, Jan. 17, Durham was hit with a record-setting snowstorm that dumped up to 55 centimetres of snow on the region, according to Environment Canada. In the midst of the flurries, Matt and Lauren Ducey woke when her water broke at 5 a.m. While the storm closed schools, COVID-19 vaccination clinics and municipal facilities across Durham, the Duceys had to find a way to the hospital. A neighbour's post to a Bowmanville Facebook group sparked a flood of support for the young family. Strangers turned up with shovels to help clean off the couple's car, driveway and trying to shovel out the road by hand. Clarington municipal staff rerouted a snowplow to clear the road. An off-duty firefighter drove the couple to Lakeridge Health Oshawa. As Lauren laboured in the deliver room, thousands of Durham residents read her story and waited for word of Baby Ducey's safe arrival into the world. She was born on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 2:47 p.m. -- approximately 56 hours after Lauren's water broke. She weighed 10 pounds and four ounces. The couple named her Raven Willow Grace Ducey. "Willow after my brother William who passed away from MS in May 2021 and Grace after Lauren's grandma," explained Matt. The couple kept their daughter's birth to themselves at first, before sharing the good news with the community the next day. "Lauren and I wanted to enjoy the moment of our first child," said Matt.
