The Pickering Football Club dome and one of the two domes at the Whitby Soccer Centre collapsed under the weight of the snow. Pickering FC Executive Director Matt Greenwood said crews were to be on site on Jan. 18 to assess the damage. There were no injuries with the Pickering dome collapse, as it was closed due to the pandemic restrictions, Greenwood noted. The winter blast on Jan. 17 saw up to 10 centimetres of snow falling each hour. Greenwood said, "Unfortunately, the weight of the snow came quickly and didn't disperse from the top of the dome. The weight started to buckle it on the west end of the bubble." The club contacted its contractor, The Farley Group, who told them to turn off the fans and that would allow the dome to come down in a controlled manner. That would limit further damage, Greenwood added. "It's completely down now." The office area wasn't damaged, Greenwood said. "Any on-field practices, obviously we were waiting for the provincial government to issue the next phase of the pandemic and that would allow us to go back onto the field. We're going to work with the city to see if we can get some school gym space when that opens up," Greenwood added. The competitive teams had moved to virtual meetings over the Christmas holidays and that will continue for some time. As for when the dome would be back up, Greenwood said, "That's the million dollar question. We have an assessment coming (Tuesday, Jan. 18). The contractor is currently working his way across the GTA, because other domes have gone down." In the past, these have been quick fixes, he noted, adding they usually took two to three weeks. He doesn't know the cost to repair the dome, but it will be covered by insurance. There we no injuries. The Pickering dome is on Clements Road, while the Whitby dome is on Rossland Road, next to Donald A. Wilson Secondary School. "The dome had been in fantastic condition and really well maintained," Greenwood said, noting it opened in November 2014. Bill Sidsworth, the executive director of the Whitby Football Club, said he thought the bigger dome would have been affected instead of the smaller one. Representatives from The Farley Group were onsite on Jan. 18. "I made the decision, when it was halfway down, I asked and they said it was probably better to take it down," Sidsworth said. That would prevent further damage and tearing to the canopy. "It's a shame." Sidsworth said he had a crew coming on Jan. 19 to remove the snow and they were to try and inflate it. "If it takes me a couple of days to get the snow off, we'll be up in three days. If it takes a week to get the snow off, we'll be up in a week," he said. The collapsed dome has been up for 12 years, while the bigger dome has been up for about three years.
