A recent privacy breach at the Durham District School Board (DDSB) resulted in the names of staff who are not vaccinated for COVID-19, or have not disclosed their status, inadvertently being shared with about 400 people. The breach happened when the board sent out a "routine" email about rapid testing. Attached to the email was a spreadsheet that listed the names of about 800 unvaccinated or undisclosed staff -- the DDSB has about 10,000 employees in total. Staff whose names appear on the list are calling the situation a "shocking" breach of medical privacy. The board did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "This incident should not have happened and we have notified, apologized to and followed up with the approximately 800 employees that were impacted," reads an email to staff from DDSB director of education Norah Marsh. "The trust of our employees is very important to us and we know that with this incident we have fallen short. The DDSB is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that a similar incident does not occur in the future." Marsh says the DDSB is providing additional training for all staff involved with secure documents and is reviewing practices related to the handling of sensitive information.
