Description

A colour photograph of a cottage at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital in Whitby, Ontario. The cottages were demolished in 1978.

Notes

On 7 February 1912, the Ontario government announced that Whitby would be the site for a new mental health facility. The new facility, called Ontario Hospital Whitby, was set to replace the outdated facility at 999 Queen Street in Toronto which was founded in 1846. The Ontario government purchased the land on the shores of Lake Ontario in Whitby for $128 000. Consisting of approximately 640 acres of land, the site for the proposed hospital was made up of a number of small farms and a larger property known as Bayside Farm.

During World War 1, the hospital was commissioned to provide support and care to wounded soldiers. It is estimated that, between 1917-1919, 3000 soldiers received some kind of treatment at the hospital at Whitby. During this period, the site was temporarily renamed to Ontario Military Convalescent Hospital. By 4 July 1919, all soldiers had completed their recovery and in October the hospital was reopened as a psychiatric facility.

Later the hospital became known as Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, a mental health facility in Whitby, Ontario. In 1996 the Whitby Mental Health Centre was opened, replacing the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. The centre was under the control of the Ontario Government and was privatized in March, 2006. It then took the name of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences.

Russell M. Preston was a Whitby resident for 44 years and enjoyed taking photographs of buildings around Whitby.
