The Rotary Club of Whitby is offering one graduating student at each of Whitby's eight high schools an opportunity to win a $500 bursary. It's the first time the club has awarded bursaries at all high schools in the same year. "This provides an opportunity for each school to put forth their most well-rounded candidates and know that a member of their student population will be recognized," says Mary Nurse, bursary committee chair. Interested students must write an essay that demonstrates their leadership and volunteerism in the community. Those who are shortlisted will then be interviewed by a panel of Rotarians. Nurse says the club is looking at the "whole student" with a focus on community service, volunteering, school involvement, extra-curricular activities, part-time employment, leadership skills and overall achievement. "For young leaders who embody these values and are aligned with Rotary's belief of service above self, the Whitby club wishes to recognize and support these students who ultimately will become our future leaders," she says. The awards will be given at graduation. Students must have accepted admission to an accredited college or university in Canada at the time of the award and be starting their studies in the fall of their graduating year. Schools may allow as many students as interested to apply. The Rotary club is offering a seminar "Preparing an Application for the Rotary Club of Whitby 2018 Bursary" on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the Whitby Public Library from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. for interested students. The application deadline is Monday, March 19. Eligible high schools include All Saints Catholic Secondary School, Anderson CVI, Brooklin High School, Donald A. Wilson Secondary School, École secondaire catholique Saint-Charles-Garnier, Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School, Henry Street High School, and Sinclair Secondary School. Whitby Rotary Awarding Bursaries To Grads The Town of Whitby's Planning and Development committee will discuss next week the date and format for a public meeting regarding a proposed auto sales lot at the south west corner of Thickson and Winchester Roads. The first such meeting was held in September, 2015. Since then, there have been some revisions to the original lot and zoning application. The original proposal for the 3.96 hectare (9.8 acres) site had a proposed automobile sales establishment on the north portion of the subject land with the south portion remaining vacant. The applicant has been investigating options for access to Thickson Road North and has been working on a stormwater management solution for the lands. The applicant has now submitted a number of updated documents including a Traffic Impact Study and revised stormwater management information. The applicant has submitted a revised concept plan and is now proposing automobile sales establishments on both portions. However, an automobile sales establishment is not a permitted use in the M1A Zone in Zoning Bylaw 1784 for the north portion. Accordingly, the applicant has revised the application to request an exception to the parent M1A Zone which would permit the additional use of an automobile sales establishment. A Site Plan Approval application will be required. It should be noted that a traffic impact study prepared in September indicates that under future traffic forecasts (2023 and 2028), the traffic generated by the proposed development can be accommodated by the study intersections with the planned road widening of Winchester Road and Thickson Road from 2 to 4 lanes within the study area.
