Notes
Roy Edward "Ted" Sims was born at Toronto on 13 October 1925. He served as a Flight Engineer in the Second World War. He took civil engineering at the School of Practical Science in 1950 and did further studies at the University of Toronto's Ajax Campus. He was first employed by York County and Toronto Township as Engineer, before being appointed Ontario County Engineer at Whitby in 1952. He was also secretary and engineer for the Oshawa Suburban Roads Commission. He was vice-president of the County Engineers Association of Ontario, and chairman of the Engineers' Advisory committee to the Ontario Minister of Highways. In January 1964 he formed a partnership with George L. Totten, former engineer of the County of Durham and John Hubicki, engineer of Peterborough County. The new engineering firm was called Totten, Sims, Hubicki & Associates, and Ted Sims was in charge of the Whitby office of this Cobourg-based firm. The company designed roads and bridges in Durham Region and other parts of Ontario. Ted Sims received a citizenship award from the Professional Engineers of Ontario in 1993. He was Executive Director of the Oshawa Area Planning and Development Study from 1968 to 1971. He was president of the Whitby Rotary Club in 1958-59, chairman of the Whitby Planning board starting in 1956 and was in charge of the restoration of the Centennial building and civil engineering for the Whitby General Hospital. Mr. Sims died at Ajax Hospital on 1 December 2008 and is buried at Elmvale Cemetery, Elmvale, Ontario.
