- Notes
- Efforts to form a brass band in Whitby began in 1863. By 1866, the Whitby Brass Band was officially recognized for its contribution to the community in an article in the Whitby Chronicle (May 31, 1866).
The band was briefly associated with the 34th Ontario Regiment during the First World War before going on hiatus for the remainder of the decade. By the 1920s the band regrouped and was known as Whitby Citizens' Band.
The Second World War imposed another pause in the band's operations. In 1954, the band was reinstated, this time as the Whitby Police Band. During this time, the bandmaster, Eric Clarke, convinced Whitby Town Council to give the band an annual grant.
The band is still in existence.
