- Notes
- G. Norman Irwin (1903-1983) was owner and operator of Red Wing Orchards located at Highway 2 and Lakeridge Road from the late 1920s until 1983. His residence at the orchard was known as Stonehaven. Red Wing Orchards got its name from G. Norman Irwin's plane which had red wings. The orchard is currently Highland Farms, Ajax.
During the 1930s, G. Norman Irwin and his wife, Kathleen, would host an annual "flying tea party" where members of Toronto's flying club would fly to Stonehaven for tea. Some of the guests would land their planes on the private landing strip behind the house.
Marjorie Georgina Ruddy (1908-1980) was a prominent Whitby photographer and the only commercial photographer in Whitby during the 1930s and 1940s. Marjorie was the official photographer for the Whitby Police Department starting in the 1930s and as a result took many photographs of car accidents, fingerprints and crime scenes. (Station Gallery.
