- Notes
- James Holden was born on February 29, 1828 at Markham, Ontario and was engaged in mercantile business there until 1857 when he moved to Prince Albert, a village south of Port Perry. In Prince Albert he published a newspaper called the North Ontario Observer. In 1864 Mr. Holden was appointed official assignee for Ontario County and moved to Whitby. In 1873 he ran for election as a representative of the Liberal Party of Canada in the federal election for Ontario South riding, but lost to T.N. Gibbs of Oshawa. Mr. Holden was Deputy Reeve of Whitby in 1868 and Mayor in 1878. From 1873 until his death he was managing director of the Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway. From 1874 until his death he was President of the Ontario Ladies' College. He was also one of the founders of the Dominion Bank in 1871. He died on October 24, 1881 in Dominion City, Manitoba while on a trip to the Canadian west where he was attempting to raise money for a transcontinental railway. He is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
