Black and white negative of Bert Johnston on his 81st birthday.
Notes
Bert Johnston (1867-1956) was born in Goderich on 1 May 1867. He started his trade at the age of 13 operating the printing press at the Goderich Signal. Johnston came to Whitby in 1903 and worked for the Whitby Gazette and Chronicle and the Mundy Goodfellow Printing Company, retiring in 1946 after 66 years in the printing industry.

A real supporter of local sports, he managed a ladies' softball team and was awarded the Vorvis Trophy as Whitby's leading sportsman in 1950. He was an honourary member of the Kinsmen Club and supported the Red Cross. He maintained contact with his hometown, however, writing articles for the Goderich Sentinal-Star.

Johnston died at Whitby on 14 February 1956 and is buried at Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin.
