Classes remain half days A heavily critisized motion to change kindergar- ten classes to a full day every other day was defeated at last week's Durham Board of Education meeting. Trustee Linda Carder's (Pickering) motion was not supported by any of the other 16 board members and no seconder was found for the motion. A motion can not be discussed until it has been seconded. A gropof about 75 paren- ts applauded when they saw what happened to the motion they were prepared to fight to preserve of the present system of half-day kin- dergarten classes five days a week. "The purpose of this motion was to clear the books or send it to the com- mittee where it can be given a fair hearing," said Carder. She said that the motion 1 had been made to clear the books of a motion that had been approved last April. The motion would have seen a pilot project set up in schools based on the full day classes. Carder went on to say that the motion had been left with the administration commit- tee who had done nothing' with it. Another trustee, Yvonne Christie (Scugog), said the administration committee had looked around for a school to try the system out on but had found no one willing to comply. Many of the parents felt the motion would be unfair to the needs of the children. "The emotion ranged from anger to frustration to disbelief that the author of this motion could be so in- sensitive to the needs of four and five year olds," said Ken Chevis, chairman of Uxbridge school com- munity liason committee. Many agrued that it would be hard for the students to spend a full day in schbol and then have a full day off. "Our work in health education, with asthamtic children and for older people with chronie lung disease is becoming better known," says Veater, "but too many people still ignore our cam- paign because they think the money goes to TB, and isn't really necessary." In recent years deaths from lung disease have steadily increased. Par- ticularly noticeable in the 98 per cent increase in em- physema deaths among women. Christmas Seals fund research projects and local community programs to help victims of lung disease. No universal day care; Ashe George Ashe, told a recent forum on day care that the provincial conservatives government believes that some families need sub- sidized day care but that they do not support univer- sal day care. According to Ashe, the Progressive Conservative MPP for Durham West, the Tories philosophy is that all children have the right to high quality day care, but that the parents must take the responsibility for their children. MPP's Ashe, (Sarnia- Liberal), George Blundy and Bellwoods New Democrat Ross McClellan put forth their partiesviews on day care at the forum held by the Social Planning Council of Oshawa-Whitby. While all three party members agreed that all children have a right to good day care services, suggestions branched out to include a system where parents would be forced to take the initiative to place their children in centres, to fully socialized day care. Planning council spokësman Marjorie - Mc- Colm said that about 70 per cent of the children enrolled in durham Region day care centres are from single parent families. Of the 667 children enrolled at these centres about 80 per cent are sub- sidized by the region's social services department. McColm said that the $1.3 million that the region budgeted for day care in 1981 is not enough. "By the year 2000, 73 per cent of all women will be in the work force, and a lot of people are suffering even now because of a lack of good day care." She went on to say that the region is lacking lunchtime and after school day care centres as well as therapeutic and assessment centres for developmentally handicapped children. Ashe.said that the gover- nment expendature for day care has gone up from $3 million in 1970-71 to just un- der $48 million this year. He added that the gover- nment is doing it's best con- sidering they "don't have a bottomless pit out there as far as funds go."
