WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNLISDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1980. PAGE 11 $1)2 million ii improvements for lodg9e Durham REgional Council will be asked to approve a measure that wilI ses $1.2 million set aside over the next three years for the con- struction of a new wing and other renovations to Whit- by's Fairvlew Lodge Home for the Aged. Should the recommen- dation be accepted, the region will have to overcome the temporary problem 0of where to house some 49 residents of the facility while the work is being done. The renovations are scheduled to being in 1982. Regional Councillor John DeHart (Oshawa), chair- man of the region's social services committee, said Iast week that a new 50 bed wing should be constructed to house the displaced residents. However, current funds only provide for a 29 bed ex- tension to the facility, which is the region's oldest having been constructed in 1952. DeHart said that the provincial government is willîng to match the region's $1.2 million contribution to the project but is unwilling to provide funds for a larger wing. "I think its stupid, Business award Past-President of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce Margerite Kulik presents the plaque for Business Person of the Year to this year's recipient Bill Nurse, president 0f Nurse Cliev Olds while incoming president Rick Raczkowski watches the proceedings. The councillor also said that the home needs two ex- tra beds not only to house those residents displaced by the renovations but to reduce the ever-growing waiting list of people needing to be admitted to the region's three homes for the aged. An officiai of the social services department said recently there are more than 400 people on that waiting list. After the 'outbreak of salmonella poisoning at the home last year, a recom- mendation was brought for- ward ini a report that would have seen more than $2.4 million in improvements made at the home. That reports stated that there was a need for more washrooms and wash basins for the residents as well as other improvemnents that would prevent another out- break of the disease. At its meeting last Thur- sday, the social services recommended that the counicil spend $375,000 for a new wing in 1981, $771,000 in 1982, and $55,000 in 1983.
