This Christ- mas, lend an elf a hand! Make a few holiday toys with your own hands. One idea that may be most appropriate: a Santa hand puppet. They're simple to make (no elfin magie required); all you need is some house- hold scraps, a bit of time and, of course, that Christmas spirit. The puppet serves as a great stocking stuffer or decoration. But, what better way to keep your friends' and relatives' little Jimmys and Janes enter- tained on Christmas day than by putting their hands into a puppet and out of mischief. First, prepare the materials you'll need: a rectangle of red felt, 18 by 8 inches; scraps of red, white and black felt; a small, white pompon; a red bead; glue; scissors; an empty L'eggs egg-shaped hosiery container and a scrap of cardboard. Fold the large piece of red felt in half. Stitch a simple "T-shaped" body, leaving the ends of the arms open. Cut along the stitch and turn the material inside-out. Fold an inch- square piece of white felt in two and cut out mitten- shaped hands. Slip the ends into the armholes and sew. Complete the puppet's body by cutting a 1 ½-inch hole across the top center of the body which will be for the head. Glue a ½-inch wide band of black felt around the body and place cuffs on the sleeves and a white buckle on the front. Make the puppet's head by taking the smaller hosiery egg half and cover- ing the outside in alumi- num foil. Press the tip of the egg against the t i p of a heated iron. The egg will soften, allowing you to cut an inch-wide finger-hole in the bottom. Now, cut an inch-wide strip of cardboard that is long enough to be shaped into a tube that will fit the hole. Slip the tube into the hole and glue one end to the plastic egg. Now, slip the other end of the tube into the hole you made in the body and glue. Finally, cut a strip of white felt' for a collar around Santa's neck. Glue the larger egg half to the egg. While it dries, cut a five-inch square of red felt and shape into a cone hat. Add a pompon to the end. Glue the hat to the top of the egg. Add a ½-inch strip of white felt around the edge. Santa's Beard Make Santa's beard from a three by four-inch piece of white felt, rounding the edge in a wavy line. Glue this to the lower portion of the egg. Now, with a black marker, draw on a smile and eyes. Finish off the face with a two-inch-wide white felt moustache and then glue a small red bead onto the moustache for the nose. Now that you have made Santa you can see that the possibilities for other puppets are endless. Create elves, Christmas carolers, angels and rein- deers.
