MIPP (PC-DURHAM WEST) p ~J. Ini order to draw commumity attention to the need for career planning and to demonstrate to young people the wide range of job options available in Ontario, the Ontario Youth Secretariat ia once again planning a Career Week from November 3 to 9, Career Week will only reach its full potential if the entire community la actively lnvolved. It la time for young people to be interacting with parents, teachers and members of the THERE HAS'NEYER BEEN A BElTER YEAR TO BUY A HAMMOND APP AY STURDAY OCTOBER 25TH1q Career Week needs eonumnity support worklng community whom they would not normallY meet. This interaction la designed to be thought-provoking in order te demonstrate genuine alternatives for selectlng a career. It is hoped that young people will give serlous consideration to pursulng an option whlch they bave neyer consldered before. It la true that one job no longer makes a career. Most people will bave several jobs te a lifetime. They mlght be in a related field, or tbey might be iu several totally unrelated areas. However, a career must start wlth a job. As a result, Career Week wil strive te, explain exactly what Is -involved i the varlous job options. That means that young people should have a feeling for the day-to-day routine. They should under- stand what responsibilities there are, what probleins and wbat pleasures. They must learn what qualification they wll require socially, physlcally andtechnlcally. It la also useful to know the salary range they could expect in today's market, and the possibilities for advancement or transfer te related fields. A career la really a lifetime of work which everyone must face. The work may be in one job or many, but if our youth are going to make such an important choice, it le our respon- sibility to ensure they are well-informed. And we should help our young people to select a career I a logical, methodical fashion. First, a young person must learn to reallatically evaluate his/her straenghts and weaknesses, so that they can use this knowledge te select a career that ie suited to their personallty. We can teach them how to prepare a resume, and how to present themselves in a firat interview. Young people need reassurance that starting a career la a job in itself and they might not always be succeseful at the firet try. It la here that parents can offer tremendous assistance by encouraging determination and perseverance. Teachers can help by encourageing students to vlait the workplace of their parents for a day, and by making arrangements for employers to bring in prototypes or samples of machines and tools used in the workplace. The communlty can participate by donating an arena or centre where displays can be set up on all different types of trades, occupations or choices.1 The Ontario Youth Secretariat bas developed visual aida, publicity brochures, posters and ideas for use by the entire community during Career Week. Individuals and busiesses in Durham West who are willing te become involved in this program, should contact your local high echool or the Ontario Youth Secretariat at 965-489.
