PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS By MICHIAEL KNELL Free Press Staff The eastward extension of the GO Train service could be the hottest issue in the upcomlng municipal elec- tion according to, Ontario Riding MP Scott Fenneil. "If the voters knew just how inexpensive GO rail couid reaily be, it would become the bottest issue In the municipal election," he said. The Progressive Conser- vative backbencber issued a report earlier in the sumnmer to federal and provincial of- ficiais outining bis proposai for a rush hour only exten- sion of the commuter ser- vice. Estimates have placed the coet of a full scale extension of GO Train service from Pickering to Osbawa (in- cludlng Ajax and Whitby) at $%6 million. However, Fennel bas ciaimed that the service could be expanded during the rush hour periods tor about $1 million. Fenneli said that this plan could be put in effect if "CN and CP could get their acts together and co-ordinate diversion of freight trains. " "It is stlll incredibly inex- pensive to extend the service if they go with my phased in rush hour proposai on already existing rail," Fen- neil said. A spokesman for Fennels office said that the MP has be trying to get Canadian Minister of Transport Jean- Luc Pepin to use bis influen- ce in getting CN to look at the proposai. However, the Tory MP charged that "'Pepîn is. lukewarm on anything that doesn't corne fromn bis own bureaucracy." He aiso added that ail three levels of government are resistant to new ideas. "Sam Cureatz (MPP for Durham East), has been helpful in circulating the plan but there must be more voter pre.tsure, " he said.
