PO. Box 206, Whitby. O) ig. Michael J. Knoll Community EdItor Marjorie A. Burgess Production Manager Karen Thompson Advertising Manager Mailing Permit No. 460 Member of mhe Whitby Chember of Commerce Thirty-five people are now seeking election to various municipal offices The Whitby Free Press is, indeed, happy to an- nounce that the Town of Whitby will be holding an election to fll all of the municipal offices, ex- cluding that of mayor, on November 10. This is a far cry from the situation we were ex- periencing two weeks ago when it looked as though all the positions that were up for grabs were going to be f1lied by acclamation. Firstly, The Whitby Free Press would like to congratulate Regionai Councillor Bob Attersley on his elevation to the mayor's chair on Whitby Town Council. However, it is unfortunate that he did not have to win his seat through the election process. Never-the-less we would like to take this oppor- tunity to wish him well in his new political under- taking. We have known Bob for a number of years and we feel that he has proven to be an astute, aggresive member of the community with a good business head. He should make an excellent mayor and we're happy to see him get the position. As of 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning, the following positions were being contested by the named in- dividuals: Regional Councillor, two to be elected by the generai vote: Tom Edwards; Gerry Emm (incum- bent); and, John Goodwin. North Ward: one to be elected by the residents of the ward: Ross Batten; Bob Carson (incumbent); and, Rene Thiebaud. West Ward, one to be elected by the residents of the ward: Linda Buffet, Joe, Bugelli (incumbent); and, Angle Llttlefield. Centre Ward, one to be elected by the residents of the ward: Marie Brooks; Barry Evans (incum- bent); and, Robin Lyon. East Ward, one to be elected by the residents of the ward: Joe Drumm (incumbent); and, Bill Lovelock. Whltby Hydro-Electric Commission, four to be elected by the general vote: Robert Cawker (in- cumbent); Gerald Cox (incumbent); James Crane; John Hughes; Martin Van Kessel; Glen Konorowski; Don Lovelock; John Mann; John McKinney (incumbent); and, Albert Randail (in- cumbent). Durham Regioni Roman Catholic Separate School Board, three to be elected by the general vote of the separate school supporters only: Martin Doleweerd; Andy Miller (incumbent); Chuck Roche (incumbent); and, Susan Smith. Durham Board of Education, two to be elected by the general vote of public school supporters only: lan Brown, John Buchannan; Peggy Cochrane; Carol-Ann Forde; Rudy Kelm; Don Kennedy; Marguerite Kulik; and Peter Wutherspoon. This list of names represents a sudden increase in interest in the municipal election process, an in- terest that is welcome and needed in our com- munity. There are incumbents, in every race, except that of the Durham Board of Education, who will now have to justify positions that they have taken in or- der to win re-election. The electorate now also are in the position of making a choice between the views of several people. This choice is an absolute necessity in the democratic process. The Whitby Free Press would also like to take this opportunity to wish the best to ahl the can- didates and to encourage our readers to take a littie time on November 10 and vote. People sometimes think that their vote means nothing. Everyon's vote means something. There are 101 poils throughout the Town of Whitby, no one will be more than a few blocks away from their polling station. If, for some reason, a reader cannot vote on November 10, an advance poil will be held on November 1 at the Whitby .Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Anyone needing more information on how to vote in the advance poli should contact the office of the clerk-administrator at 668-5803. On November 10, the polis will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and anyone who has not been notified of the location of their polling station should also contact the abovè mentioned office. Any eligible elector who is not on the preliminary list of voters can get on the list by going to the clerk-administrator's office at the municipal building and request to be added. (Please note that additions to the list cannot be made over the telephone.) The Town of Whitby will have an election and this publication would urge every taxpayer and resident to get Involved in their community and support the candidate of their choice by voting on November 10. Sheffield takes us to task over our buses position Dear Sir: Your Editiorial RE, The Corridor Area Meeting To Discuss the Bus issues contains many inaccuracies, however, I take great exception to your remark, quoted com- pletely out of context, RE Mr. Joe Drumm's possible acclamation in the upcoming elec- tion. Accuracy in repor- ting should be the main concern of your newspaper. The best thing you can do for this Town would be to report "the facts as presented" or elese report nothing. Your continued attack on any person, or group of people, who do not agree with the bus system, as it presently exists, may only cause those with some useful suggestions to walk away from helping. Perhaps that is what you wish. Obivously, your elec- tion disclaimer of not backing a candidated does not apply to picking sides on an issue. Vic Sheffield 256 Meadow Road Whitby. i q
