GREENAWAY Free Press Staff Last week about 40 people were injued in an explosion at a powerhouse at the Whit- by Psychiatric Hospital. The majority of them were rushed to the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital in Whitby for treatment but none of the staff or victims were overly concerned. Even when one individual was wheeled "dead" into the morgue he quickiy regained his composure and lit Up a cigarette. Confused? The whole "disaster" was planned exersize in emergency procedure for hospital staff and ambulan- ce drivers concocted severai months ago by George Jones of the Ontario Hospital portant in case of true emergency." Kunetsky said that it is important to know how many injured there are geared to handie so many. Ail the excess must be civer- ted to surrounding faclties like the Oshawa General Association. John Kunetsky, ad- ministrator of the J.O. Rud- dy Hospital, called the procedure a success although he did admit some problems cropped Up. IIWe ran into a few problems in tri-age and communications but thats the reason we have such ex- cersizes, to iron out any problems we run into." Tir-age is a slght set up both in the hospital and at the scene of the accident where casualties are sorted according to the severity of their injuries, the more serious to be transported and dealt with first. "It wasn't done as effec- tively as it could have been done," sald Kunetsky. Communications were also confused at times due in part to the planned "concer- ned" phone cails about casualties and legitimate patient inquirys. "IWe neyer did find out hôw many casualties were coming in which is very im- Kunetsky said that such excersizes are carrîed on at least once a year but not always on such a large scale. "They (the staff) ail knew that something was going to happen last week but we tried ta, keep it an element of suprise as ta what and when." Kunetsky was confident that should such an emergency arise DR. J.O. Ruddy Hospital would be able ta, handie it, "depending on the numnber of injured." "It- would be very unrealistic to plan on han- dling a large number of casualties in the event of a large scale disaster," he said. At present the hospital would be able to "cope" with 40 patients, depending on the severîty of the injuries. As weiI, the nature af the injuries were not reported. Forty students from Den- nis O'Connor High School were used as "«victims ". "The students were given instruction as how to act with the type 0f injury they had sustained." The idea of the excersize was that a group of students from DOC were being shown around the powerhouse at the Whitby Psych when it exploded. Ambulances then rushed casualties to Ruddy Hospital where they were attended to by 10 doctors and a hast of nurses.
