GIIEENAWAY Free Press Staff People who suffer from heart attacks and stopage of breath have a short period of time which they can remain without oxygen. Since, in a town the size of ministration Of car- diopulminary respiration (CPR) could conceivably save someones life. - "A person going witbout air bas approximately four to six minutes before per- manent brain damage la caused," said Robert Bell, IIWe have put through about 90 people since last March, " said Bell. The firat night of class teaches the student briefly about the beart, respiratory systemn and the basica of CPR. A demonstration of one man CPlU la also given. two dummies (one an infant and one an adult) are used. The adult bas a amal "com- puter" I nside which registers, ail the vital ac- tions which should take place during the procedure. Bell stressed that upon finding a downed person it ia important to establish his or ber unresponsiveness first. This ia done. by hyper- extending the neck and checklng to see if the air passage is blocked. Next breathing is checked. The rescuer should put his head down by the victims mouth and watch the chest for any movement. If none la evident he should then listen for any sign of breathlng and finally feel with bis cheek if the person is breathing. If ail 0f these tests prove negative the person should give the victim four quick breatbs. Once this is done the vic- tims pulse should be checked by placing the fingers around the neck and locatlng the victim's cartold artery. Bell said that If no pulse can be found cardlo- resusitation should be star- ted. By applylng pressure with the palm of the hand a few inches Up the sternum (breastbone) t.he resuer can force the heart to resum pumping blood to the body and hopefuily start it again.
