GREENAWAY Free Press Sitaff Dr. Ken Hobbs, of the Whtby Medical Centre, wil be travelling to India this month to try and curb some of the reported 30,000 -35,000 deaths which resuit from red messies every yesr in that country. Hobbs wil be lesving for bis second visit to India in two years as part of a Rotary International project to innoculate children against the disesse which has such a high annual mon- tality rate. While there, he will super- vise the project making sure that proceedures for in-' noculation are carnied out L smoothly. Three-and-a-half-milion dome of vaccine will be shipped to the country in the next two years. "One of the many problems is that the vaccine bas to be kept frozen," said Hobbs. The first shipment will leave India on October 25. "I wilI be travelling tbrougbout the whole district to set up a master plan in co-operation with local Rotarians. " Two Rotarians will travel across to India with every shipment of vaccine for the same purpose. "Red measies is the greatest killer of cbildren under three-years of aie in that country," sald Hobbs. He explalnied that many of the farinera will have ten children with the expec- tation that over haif of them wil die before they reach t.he age of five. The project was funded jointiy by the Rotanians and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The entire project will cost half a million dollars in U.S.' currency. One half million doses of vaccine will be shipped during the first phase and the reniaining five shipmen- ts wil be delivered at regular intervals until 1982. While there Hobbs said he will also be negotiating with Ipoh, Malaisia because they are interested in starting a sirnilar though smaller, program witb Durham area Rotarians.
