WITBY FREE PRESS The 1981 Pontis Fuln-Size Pontiacs A new grille design with a fine vertical texture gives the full-size Pontiacs a bolder appearance in 1981. Catalina and Parisienne are offered as a two-door coupe and four- door sedan; Catalina Safari and Parisienne Safari are four-door, two-seat station wagons with an optional third seat. The 3.8-litre (231 c.i.d.) two-barrel V-6 engine is standard on all full-size coupes and sedans while the 4.4-litre (267 c.i.d.) two- barrel V-8 is standard for Laurentian, Catalina and Parisienne wagons. Optional engines for coupes and sedans include the 4.4-litre (267 c.i.d.) V-8 or the 5.0- litre V-8 with the 5.7-litre (350 c.i.d.) diesel availability expanded to all full-size Pontiac models. All Pontiac sedans and coupes will have an automatic transmission torque converter clutch to help improve highway fuel economy. A full-width bench seat in Sierra vinyl or new Rosalind cloth is standard for Catalina coupes and sedans. Also these models receive an upgraded door trim panel. Parisiennes feature a notch- back bench or optional 60/40 split seat in Doeskin and Derma vinyl or Crestwood and Empress cloth with bucket seats optional. All Parisiennes have distinctive tail lamp styling. Parisienne Brougham, the full-size flagship, features a Prima knit velour 60/40 split seat with loose pillow backs and shirred design seats. Tiffany plush cut pile car- peting and simulated woodgrain appliques on the instrument panel and upper door panels also are included in this elegant interior. The Embassy edition of the Brougham features all leather seats with loose pillow backs. A tone generator chime is a new standard feature for Parisienne Brougham. "Puncture sealing" tires are a new available option for all full-size Pontiacs in 1981. Another new option for the full-size Pontiacs' will be cruise control with resume feature. Electric outside mirrors, introduced as an option last year, are again available in 1981. An assortment of Delco sound systems also will be available for 1981 including the ETR (electronically tuned receiver) signal-seeking AM/FM stereo radio with digital readout. Engineering features on all full-size Pontiacs include a new brake, knuckle and hub assembly with a low drag caliper that has a quick take- up master cylinder. This new system reduced drag on the brakes when they are not being used. A hot melt wax coating on full-size Pontiac frames improves corrosion resistance. The Freedom Il battery is also a standard item. Le Mans In 1981, LeMans models have a lower and more horizontal front end ap- pearance with a new grille and front fascia panel, featuring new quad rec- tangular headlamps, park and signal lamps. Four-door sedan models have a new formal roof design to enhance the car's "touring" character. New traditional wide tail lamps, featuring a chrome grid design, are standard on ail coupes and sedans. LeMans and Grand LeMans both are offered as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, and four-door, two- seat station wagon. Grand Am is discontinued in 1981. The 3.8-litre (229 c.i.d.) V- 6 engine is standard on ail LeMans and Grand LeMans coupes and sedans with an automatic transmission. Available engines includes the 4.4-litre (267 c.i.d.) and 4.3-litre (265 c.i.d.) V-8 for ail models and the 5.0-litre (305 c.i.d.) and 4.9-litre (301 c.i.d.) as additional engine options on wagons. The 3.8- litre (231 c.i.d.) V-6 is standard on the wagons along with an automatic transmission. Inside, LeMans coupe's and sedan's full-width seats are carryoyer design in a new Rosiland cloth or Sierra vinyl. Standard interior for the top-of-the-line Grand LeMans coupes and sedans includes a notchback full- width front seat in Doeskin vinyl or Pompey cloth with Florentine and Empress cloth 60/40 split or bucket seats optional. Sierra vinyl seats are standard on ail Safari models with custom notchback, 60/40 split or bucket seats available in Pompey cloth or Doeskin vinyl. New standard features for ail LeMans include a side-iift frame jack, a new compact spare wheel and tire, and the new Freedom Il battery. And, in 1981, power steering is standard on ail LeMans models. Engineering improvements include front and, rear shock NEW CAR SUPPLEMENT, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 19 1981 Pontiac Grand LeMans 1981 Pontiac Phoenix SJ absorbers with new single lip seals and Pliacell bags that help reduce friction and improve control; revised steering linkage, and new tire designs with increased tire pressures that help to im- prove fuel economy. Body mounts have been retuned for smooth ride with the higher tire pressures. Among the new options for LeMans models are a three-function tone generator that provides three unique pleasant sounds to indicate seat belts not buckled, keys left in ignition or headlamps left on. Optional new full wheel covers with jewel-like fins in chrome and charcoal complements the 1981 design motif of LeMans and Grand LeMans. Cruise control with resume feature and "punc- ture sealing" tires also are new options for LeMans in 1981.
