"I can't believe this. " Love, head of the 650 member union was reacting to an announcement by the Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA) that it had approved the application of Nakia Produets Lt.d of Toronto to import and distribute automobile and truck tire as well as rubber boots. FIRAs announcement was attacked by Waterloo Tory MP Walter MeLean who said that Nokia was being allowed into Canada at a time when Canadian workers are being laid offf because the industry is in trouble. The federal agency also gavie its blessmng to the company's proposal to set up joint operations with Canadian firms for the manufacturing of its produe- ts ini tlis country. McLean said that he raised the issue in the House of Commons because the government should flot allow european f irnis to locate ini I this country at the expense of the longer established U.S. subsidies. Lève said that FIRA's ac- tion, along wth the recent $42 million grant to Michelin in Nova scotia was just the latest series of moves that are 44sacrificing" the Canadian tire industry. "'It's almost as if it's part of a conspiracy to ruin the established tire plants ln Canada, " Love said. "Policitians are startlng to, amaze me."p Whitby's Firestone of Canada plant is due to close its gates for the last on July, 18, two weeks from Frlday.
