IBetween You and Me By RUTH CHAMBERS Is sex edue ation Iporno graphy nisehools? A. few more words this week about sex education in the schools. I have been asked to write about this topie by some concerned parents. I do not have children in the sehool system; if I had, this coiumn would take a much stronger viewpoint. I would feel compeiled to " say it as I see it". I and many others look at it from a taxpayer's point of view but certalnly that la a mînor consideration when compared to children's welfare. This is a topie whlch could be deait with at great length wlth many questions asked. Parents are questionlng thia type of education everywhere, not only in North America but In Europe too. A friend who has just returned from there tells me his hosto in a far away land cai tpornography In their sehools and intend dolng away with it. Every child has the rlght to a carefree and happy childhood but today they are being lombarded right and left wlth ail sor- ts of things whlch normally are the parent's concern which they transmit to their children easily and well. A lot of people feel that ail the commercials and printed matter is not really taken in because it la too famiiar. I don't think so. Ask them, what they just heard or saw on TV and they may not be able to tell you but somehow, somewhere it ail sank in, taken in likely unconsciously. Now we are about to filI their mids with other things. The intelligent parent gives much thougbt to keeping a certain age group busy and occupied, in other words to keep them out of misehief. The sex drive is a natural and powerful force, which grows with the maturing of the young body. Direction and guidance are needed at this time; restraint has to be taught and discipline mlLst be taught. Refinement ai jc-oarseness enter into ail of this too. There will always be rowdy, crude types about, coarseness of speech and manner but at the same timo the "gentle" women and mon exist who generally produce the same in kind. Why lower standards? Why not try to uplif t the general torie of behza¶Liour? Barn yard sex or whatever you choose to cal it has been around forever. Are we not encouraging this? From many people's point of view the resuits of ail t.his type of thing is not stopping pregnancies, or V.D., not even slowing them up. What wouid you do under these circunistances? Suppose a young daughter of yours was asked this question in school. "What would you do if you got pregnant?"I The child and 1 say that advisedly, wrote, 'II would have the baby adopted." The teacher erases that and writes ini "no - abortion." This sort of thing can happen. If we could sit on a fluffy white cloud far above the earth and look down, what would we hear and set? We certainly would see a beautiful land, this land of ours. Potontial which knows no bounds, riches beyondý coni- prehension, young people and old people. The young people with the world in their hands, tho hope for the future. The older ones who have given their youth to inake this a botter world to ive in, both for themselves and their own, and also for others. Think of our mon who gladly went to battie to save us ail and save us they did. Is it ail for naught? Froni that cloud would we see the anguish of many, the tears of othors? The discontent, the strikes, the scramble for more and more with less effort? Great amounts of monios being spent in foolish, futile ways when it could be put to better use. We could have a Utopia of sorts, it's al bore for the asking; perfect nover, not when humans are concerned but very close to it. No one can wake up in the morning, look out the window and not wonder at the beauty around them. This croates optimism and hope, always hope that ail wiil be well. Let's use our gifts to make this a botter place to be. Let's focus on.the good and forget the fads and the image makers. When it comes to schools why in this day and age of great change can't we have a reaily good program for very bright children? When you ask about this the usual answer is, "'not FREE PRESS, 'WEDNESDAY, MAY 2l1 989, PAGE 9 enough money, the budget is too 10w. " I find t.his very strange. The money seems to be forthcoming for other programs, somietimes less important. Why can't the money be diverted? Can you imagine the waste when bpys and girls who are very bright are flot stiniulated to better things? The potential bore could be utilized to the fullest. I don't think the problem of set- ting them apart needs to enter into it. Everyone sets them- selves apart at some time anyway. It wiil have to become an "in" thing no doubt before it can happen.
