"'Anything Up to $500 (in property taxes) wiil be paid by the Province of Ontario," Ashe said adding that the money wifl be sent dlrectly to seniors rather than them having to wait until they file their tax forms at the end of the year. Senior citizens who rent their homes will not be left out in the cold under this plan. Ashe said that these people will receive 20 per cent of their rent, also up to $500, to compensate for the property tax they pay. Seniors will also receive a sales tax refund of $50 and an increase in the guar- nateed annual income gran- ts of $10 for a single person and $20 per couple. The other area to benefît under Ontario Treasurer Frank Miller's budget are small business. The government, Ashe said, will introduce an in- vestment tax credit and a reduction in capital taxes. Under the proposai, small business will have to pay only $100 fiat tax if their business grosses between $100,000 and $1 million a year. Previously, businesses who grossed Up to $100,000 paid a $50 tax and after that the tax was prorated. Ashe estimates that under this scheme " -150,000 business will pay $100 or less" in capital tax. "This budget is directed for and geared to small business," he said. Small business will alos receive tax cpedts equalling 20 per cent of the depreciated cost of new assets Up to a maximum of $3,000, Ashe said. The fee that the province pays retailers for collecting the retail sales tax wiIl also increase from $700 to $1,000 this year, Ashe noted. Ashe also expressed hîs confidence that the budget will provide much needed assistance to senior citizens and small business. THE HEART FUND -g Icw D.W.MýCQUAY 103 DUNDAS ST.
