McNab, Chairman -AND SAVE AS YOU GO 100 attend horti*cultural society's daffod il show By MARGARET BEATH BHS Dirctor "Spring Forth" was the theme and the people cer- tainly did, when over 100 at- tended the Daffodil Show held by the Brooklin Hor- ticultural Society on April 23. 'Tis a pity the *daffodils didn't do the same. The meeting was opened by President Valerie Hun- dert at 8:10 .m. and she welcomed members and guests from Cèannington, Georgina-Brock, Bowman- ville, Oshawa, Whitby and Trenton. Margaret Beath then read a report on the first District 17 annual meeting held at Orono on April 19. Valerie thanked Gordon Wick for his beautiful display of pictures taken at the District Meeting. I Rene Thiebaud then an- nounced the Grand Opening and expansion of the Oshawa Garden Centre on April 25, 26 and 27 and in- vited those present to par- ticipate in the draw prizes being offered. Valerie then introduced Ken Brown, the society's well know plant auctioneer. Ken and the action were both lively and entertaining. Money flowed like water and neyer in tfe aimais of our horticultural history*bas so, much money changed hamids and for such a good cause. Ken received some accoun- ting assistance from John Jefferies and Margaret Davis and also from Valerie Hundert, Marg Beath, Kara Braun and Gordon Wick whp carried the plants to the highest bidders. Mfte the auction, a draw was made for three prizes, two donated by the Kinsmen Club of Brooklin and one by Ken Brown, a Fragrant Vibur- num Standard, an Agincourt Beauty Lilac and a Yucca Plant, won by Laurie Byrne, of North York, Marjorie Stevenson, Brooklin and Joanî Rich, Whitby, respec- tively. . Doris Marlow was our very competent judge for the Daffodil Show with just 42 entries due to the in- clement weather. Winners were as follows: Best specimnan award, donated by Oshawa Garden Centre, won by Lyla Allan; Best foliage prize, donated by Bruce Bagg, Realtor, won by Audrey Young; and best decorative award donated by Robert Eckel, florist, also won by Audrey Young. There followed a bake sale planned and manned by Jack and Lyla Allan and the evening ended with refreshments served by Aldine Wick, Donna Geisberger and Valerie Simons. This Society wishes to thank ahl who worked and participated in this en- joyable evening and hope to see you at the next meeting on May 28. County Town Carnival General Meeting.
