WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESL)AY, APRIL 23. 19 80, PAGE 3 "It's a beautiful mess".... Fennei attacks sp eech as s ocialistie By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff In the predictable tradition of opposition members, Scott Fenneli et- tacked the Liberal gover- nment's Speech from the Throne as being both socialist and undemocratic. In a telephone interview fromn his House of Commons office, the recently re- elected Progressive Conser- vative MP for Ontario Riding said that, "is a classic Trudeau Throne Speech. "It's a beautiful mess, it takes everything away from everyone." Fenneli attacked the Liberals for what he termed to be blgger government saying that the policies outllned in the speech would do nothing to solve the coun- try's present economnic problems. "He plans on more gover- nment rather than less government," he said. The Claremont resident and businessman criticized the governxnent's proposai to raise personal income taxes and Prime Minster Pierre Trudeau's statement that "lCanadiens will eccept sacrifice to live within their national meens.-" "He will have dried Up in- vestment in Canada" if he camres out these policies Fenneil said. The government was ac- cused of breaking their cempaign promise of in- creasing senior citizen's supplementary benefits by $35 a person by giving only $5a household. "It is a totally anti-free en- treprise Throne Speech," Fenneli said claiming that the Liberal's promise of a "#single national price of oul for consuxners will mean an extra 35 cents a gallon not only for cars but for heating fuel as well. " He clainied that this measure was a form of "in- direct taxation" on the fuel buying public. Fenneil, who defeated his Liberal opponent in of marijuana." "He has decided to legalize marijuana under the Food and Drug Act," Fenneli said adding, "I don't like it at ail. Until we know more about it, I think it's wrong." The Prime Minster also came under attack from Fenifdll for saying that "t.he efficiency of the federal governinent is as important an objective of these refor- ms as reducing the deficit." "Canadiens want more ef- SCOTT FENNELL February 18 election by over fective governument not 4,000 votes, was elso engry necessarily less gover- at Trudeau's proposai to nument." legalize the simple possion Fenneli said that these remarks were a danger to the free enterprise system and personal freedom. "It is a socialist Throne Speech," he said. "It takes incentive away from the in- dividual and gives more responsibility to the federal government. " "I t.hink it is a devisive Throne Speech," Fenneli said claiming that it played to Quebec and attacked the west especially with the establishment of the Petroleum Price Auditing Agency and-the introduction of the Canada 011 and Gas Act which will give PetroÇan preferencial treatmàent in the locating, developing and marketing of petroleum resources. He aise lashed out at the government's move to en- tranch language rights in the constituation. "'That means French from coast te ceast, " he said. It's such a socialist document," Fenneil said adding, "it takes away our democracy." "The whole thing is direc- ted at Quebec. " Trudeau, Fenneil said, doesn't know the economic reality of everyday Canadian life. IlBigger and better gover- nment is the bottom line," he said in a disgusted tone. 125TH ANNIVERSARY 1855-1980 THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN 0F WHITBY 1980 INTERIM TAX NOTICE SECOND INSTALMENT The second instalment of taxes for 1980 15 due and payable April 30, 1980.
